How to Store Flower So It Keeps Its Aroma

Storing flower is mostly about slowing down three things: evaporation, oxidation and light damage. Get those under control and flower holds its aroma for months. Ignore them and a week in the wrong place is enough to flatten it.

What actually degrades

The compounds that give flower its smell are volatile oils sitting on the outside of the bud. They evaporate at room temperature and evaporate faster when warm. At the same time, oxygen slowly oxidises the surface, and ultraviolet light breaks down what is left. None of this is dramatic on any single day, which is exactly why it goes unnoticed.

The humidity window

Aim for 58-62% relative humidity. That range is the working consensus and there is a reason it is narrow:

• Too dry (below ~55%) – trichomes turn brittle and shatter, aroma drops off, the smoke turns harsh
• Too damp (above ~65%) – you are in mould territory, and mould is not something to gamble on

Two-way humidity packs sized for your container are the simplest way to hold that window without thinking about it.

Containers

Glass with a proper seal is the standard answer, and it is the right one. Airtight, non-reactive, and it does not hold odours between batches.

• Good – sealed glass jars, ideally tinted or kept in the dark
• Acceptable – the resealable pouch the flower arrived in, if you press the air out
• Avoid – thin plastic bags and anything that builds static, which strips trichomes straight off the bud

Do not overfill or crush the contents. Broken-up flower has far more exposed surface and stales much faster.

Light and heat

A cupboard is better than a windowsill, every time. Cool and dark beats clever. Do not refrigerate and do not freeze: condensation on a cold bud is the fastest route to the damp end of the range, and frozen trichomes snap off at a touch.

How long it keeps

Stored properly, expect six months to a year before the aroma noticeably fades. It does not become unusable at that point, it just gets quieter and flatter. Buying in the quantity you will actually get through beats buying in bulk and watching it fade, which is part of why we sell in 1 g and 2 g.

A quick checklist

• Sealed glass, kept in the dark
• 58-62% RH, held with a two-way pack
• Cool room temperature, never the fridge
• Whole buds, broken up only when you use them
